Level 2 Conductors Scores

The Flipped Strings Level 2 Books are published for violin, viola, cello and double bass. When a school purchases a set of student books can work together using the combination of melody and ensemble parts to enable students to play all ten pieces in the books for a school string orchestra or chamber orchestra.

NOTE: Delivery of the hardcopy versions of the Flipped Music series is only available in Australia

A school purchasing a set of student books will receive the Teachers Handbook with the Conductors scores and ancillary parts such as 3rd violin and timpani.

On this web page, you can find the conductor score videos for all 10 pieces as well as some amusing and instructive tutorials from the 4 Phils String Quartet. What you are hearing in these videos are real musicians playing all the parts on REAL instruments – violin, viola, cello & double bass. Teachers/Conductors of school string orchestras can use this page to play the score videos on a large screen to show students how the orchestra should sound when they have practised and rehearsed.

What is “Flipped Strings”?
How can I best use these books for my students or ensembles?

From the Flipped Strings Teachers Handbook Level 2: The typical definition of a “Flipped Classroom” describes a reversal of traditional teaching, in which new content can be accessed by the student outside of the classroom with online learning media and then class time is devoted to sharing and processing that information in group learning, collaboration and problem solving.

How does it work for my ensemble students? From the Flipped Strings Teachers Handbook Level 2

Choose one of the pieces from the level 2 books that you think would suit your students – eg Schumann Chorale

In the rehearsal, use the video scores to introduce the students to the piece – play the conductors score video on a projector or large screen TV to the students

Allocate the parts – eg violin 1 plays violin melody. 2nd violin plays violin ensemble. Viola, Cello & Double Bass play their ensemble parts- if you have violins playing the viola part, then photocopy the 3rd violin parts in this book.

Play the video score again but have them read their part from their book whilst listening to the piece.

Try sight reading in the ensemble, then have a general discussion in the ensemble: “What are the challenges we faced?” You could treat this initial rehearsal as a project launch in a PBL project – identify and make a list of “Knows & Need to Knows” (The existing skills & knowledge that students already have as opposed to the knowledge & skills they need to acquire)

From the identified challenges, show the students some strategies for overcoming the challenges.

A. Don’t forget – preceding each section of pieces in the student books in D major, G Major etc is a short section on scales, arpeggios and fingering for that key on that instrument. In the rehearsal, always start the preparation for rehearsal with a scale and/or arpeggio for the key of that piece – make certain students continue the technical preparation for that piece in their practice at home.

B. Make certain that the students use the QR codes in their books to read their part for the ensemble in the video and listen to it. Also to listen to and read the score video and pick their part out from the score as they read it on their device.

C. When the students come back to the ensemble of a week of practice, they should now be much more confident with playing their part. The conductor/ teacher can now focus on phrasing, dynamics etc – Have the students contribute to this conversation.

D. Use the links in the student books and also here in the Teachers Handbook to the “Flipped Music Theory” website to drill down musical concepts – eg the link to “upbeat or anacrusis” for Theme from Jupiter. Show them the link in the class to discuss the concept/theory.

Praise My Soul the King of Heaven

Playing hymns in music ensembles; particularly in string ensembles, is a very good learning experience for your students; for them to learn to play exactly in time and in tune with each other. Speak with any brass player or brass band conductor and they will tell you that playing hymns is how they train intonation in the ensemble.

The 4 Phils perform the Schumann Chorale

The 4 student books in the Flipped Strings Level 2 series can be used in very flexible ways. 2 violinists can play a duet, or a violinist and violist can play a duo. You can form a trio or a quartet or the books can work together for a whole string ensemble. Here, the 4 Phils perform the Schumann Chorale as a string quartet.
